Food labelling...Know what you eat

The Regulations Relating to the Labeling and Advertising of Foodstuffs specifies a standard method of conveying information about foodstuffs to the consumers. Advantages to the consumer includes that all the superlatives and often absurd claims used on food labels and in advertising will disappear.

This will ensure a fair comparison between food products. For example the use of “No Sugar Added” will be prohibited for food that inherently contain any type of sugar. Fruit juices that contains no table sugar but fructose will no longer be allowed to display “No Added Sugar” claim on their labels.

Some of the disadvantages is the “Enhanced Function Claim” which will be in an indeterminate state, thus the public is uninformed if the manufacturer has added nutrients to a product to improve its nutritive value. The consumer will have to play detective to determine whether product A contains more dietary fibre than product B.
